Refrigerator Care / Maintenance for RVs

Probably the most used item in your RV is your refrigerator. Due to this fact the maintenance of your refrigerator is a must. Here are some quick refrigerator maintenance tips for owners of recreational vehicles.

  • Keep the refrigerator unit clean
  • Depending on the amount of usage it is recommended to have your refrigerator looked at by a certified technician every 12-18 months. (This will vary with the amount of usage)
  • Periodically check the burner flame when refrigerator is in use. The flame should be light blue in color. If the flame is not light blue you should have the refrigerator serviced
  • When cleaning the interior of the refrigerator, use baking soda and warm water. Rinse with warm water.
  • Ensure that there is proper ventilation for the refrigerator. Check that the back of the refrigerator is free of any debris
  • Check any connections for leaks.
  • Keep the refrigerator level when in use. This is especially necessary for older recreational vehicles.
  • Cool the refrigerator before use
  • Pre-cool colder items that will be placed in the refrigerator. (Such as juices, sodas, etc.) This will help keep the refrigerator cold when traveling and not in use.
  • Avoid having the refrigerator door open for long periods of time
